A solstice happens two times a year: when the Sun is farthest north or south of the Earth’s equator. These two days are referred to as the winter and summer solstice. In the northern hemisphere, summer solstice happens in June and winter solstice in December. But in the southern hemisphere the seasons are reversed. Winter solstice is the shortest day of the year and summer solstice has the longest day of the year.
