Flamingos are born with gray plumage and turn pink within the first few years of life. Their pink hue is an organic pigment called carotenoid which comes from the food they consume. Once flamingos feast upon brine, which feed upon microscopic algae that naturally produces carotenoids, their feathers will turn a rosy pink. If a flamingo didn’t feed upon brine, their coloring would eventually fade.
