The folklore surrounding black cats varies from culture to culture. In Britain and Japan, they are considered good luck. Scottish lore holds that a black cat’s arrival to a home signifies prosperity. Pirates of the 18th century believed that a black cat walking away from someone brought good luck. Fishermen’s wives would keep black cats at home in hopes that they would protect their husband at sea. It was not until the Middle Ages that negative black cat superstitions took hold, with sinister and occult qualities assigned to them. These beliefs were later brought over to America where black cats were seen as demons or a companion to witches. We think they are beautiful, regal creatures who deserve to be celebrated so we put one on this ring.
