Sedimentary rocks occur in horizontal layers called strata. Some strata contain index fossils, fossils associated with a specific time in Earth’s history. By studying strata, geologists have determined the geological time scale, the order of major events in Earth’s history.

This charm features 3 layers of sedimentary rock, with grass and blue skies residing above. The bottom layer shows a trilobite fossil which can be found in most Paleozoic sedimentary rocks throughout the world. The next layer is Mesoziac, where dinosaur fossils are found. The top layer shows Cenozoic, the current layer that is still being deposited in the Earth today. This layer contains ice age animals, like the wooly mammoth, as well as modern mammals.
