The first recorded mention of the dodo was by Dutch sailors in 1598. Endemic to the island of Mauritius, evolving in isolation from predators made the dodo fearless of humans. Sailors hunted the flightless birds, destroyed the forest habitat, and introduced other animals to the island which competed for the limited food resources. The last widely accepted record of a dodo sighting is the 1662 report by a shipwrecked mariner. No complete dodo specimens exist and its external appearance is evidenced only by drawings, paintings, and written accounts from the 17th century. We pay homage to this special creature and its history with this antique inspired signet ring.
