Regular use of the first vision aid, called a reading stone, began around 1000 AD. Early reading stones were made from crystals, beryl, or glass shaped and polished into a hemispherical lens that could be placed on top of text to magnify the letters. The first wearable eyeglasses were invented around 1284. In the 1720s, antiquarian Philipp von Stosch was credited with making the monocle fashionable but it was the introduction of the dandy’s quizzing glass in the 1970s that truly established the monocle as an article of high fashion. We love bringing an old-timey accessory back to life. This antique inspired necklace has a modern spin and features a real magnifying glass.
