In 1936, New York launched a bathing program that focused on recreation rather than hygiene. Eleven Art Deco style swimming pools were built throughout the Big Apple. Municipal architects designed these beautiful structures to last, marked by geometry, blockiness, curving, open- brickwork balconies, and playful sculptures. They are examples of state-of-the-art engineering as well as fine design. Most of these pools still exist today. The largest of the 11 pools is the Astoria Pool, the Hamilton Fish Pool was so highly regarded that the 1952 US Olympic Team used it for practice and the Colonial Park pool was later renamed to honor the baseball legend Jackie Robinson. Wear this art deco style ring to show appreciation for these remarkable structures.
