Carousels are one of the oldest amusement rides still in use today. The first known carousel in the United States operated in 1799 in Salem, Massachusetts. Carousels are known for featuring intricately designed horses for patrons to ride on. As their popularity grew, designers began carving other animals, mythological creatures, airplanes and cars to appear on the merry-go-rounds. There is even an Ohio company, present day, that crafts figures of endangered species. Of the 4,000 classic carousels built in the United States, fewer than 150 survived. Let this ring, like a carousel, represent a piece of the past and be a beacon of intricacy and beauty.
